Developing Cultural Links

Tameside College, the Sport Authority of Thailand (SAT) and the Thai Cultural Forum UK signed a Memorandum of Understanding in September 2010.  This is a formal process and is important in Thai culture, marking an agreement to work together.

During the event guests were treated to a demonstration of Muay Thai, involving an impressive display of Martial Art skills. After the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, guests were given the opportunity to visit and pay tribute to the Golden Buddha located in the College grounds.

The SAT approached the College to develop vocational qualifications for the coaches of professional Thai boxers; their aim is to develop a licensing system for the coaches. The Thai Olympic team have also agreed to make Manchester its base for the 2012 Olympics and will hopefully be using sports facilities in Tameside for their training.

Chris Massey, Head of International Development at Tameside College, commented, “This is an exciting opportunity for Tameside College to expand international links with Asia. This unique partnership has seen growth in both cultural and educational links”.
