Cover star Louise Bates provides a role model for the Travel and Tourism students.

Unlike most travel agents, selling holidays is only a small part of Louise’s job. Most of Louise’s time is spent teaching students the practical aspects of the job in a real travel agency based on the college campus.

Her unusual role is the reason why she entered a competition to feature on the front cover of the popular travel magazine, Travel Weekly. Louise won the competition and was proudly placed on the front cover along with having her very own page in the magazine detailing her achievements, an interview and a tips she has to share with the Travel industry.

Louise said, “If the students can see that I have done well, they will think it’s something they can do. It’s about being a role model and making it as fun as possible to learn”.

Louise’s current student’s age from 16 to 42 and are studying for NVQ’s in Travel Services. The students get to work in a realistic environment based in their very own travel shop on the campus grounds. Most of the business comes from the students and staff attending the college who are able to take advantage of having such a great team on site to help give advice and to book some fantastic holidays.

Louise comments, “At the start of the year I think my head’s going to explode but by the end of the year I’m crying when it’s time for the students to leave. The best part is when I go to roadshows and see many of my ex students there actually working in the industry.”
