Student is a hit in badminton championships

A Tameside College public services student has qualified for a place in the Association of College’s (AoC) national badminton championships.

Sarah Parker, a level three public services student, will be part of a team representing the north-west of England at the badminton finals in April 2018, after coming fourth in the regional qualifiers. Sarah is one of eight students from the north-west who will take part in the national competition.

Sarah, a former Copley Academy pupil, said: “I’m pleased to have got this far in the competition. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go on the day so to be going to the national championships is fantastic. Luke and the other enrichment staff have really supported me and helped to get me this far. I can’t wait to compete again.”

Luke Podmore, enrichment officer and badminton team coordinator, said: “Sarah is a very talented player and it’s great that we are able to give her the platform to showcase her talent. We are all made up for Sarah and I hope that this experience has inspired her to believe that she can compete at that level. She and all the students on the day represented the college amazingly well and they all had a great experience.”

Sarah plays badminton through the college’s enrichment programme which encourages students to take part in activities alongside their studies. Other sporting activities include: volleyball, football, basketball and a whole range of others.
