Business Master Class

Tameside College Business students were treated to a masterclass in branding from a local industry expert.

Manchester based, Shona Melvin, visited the college to pass on her wealth of knowledge by delivering a four hour workshop on Brand Creation to enthusiastic Business students.

Shona is the Account Manager for BJL, which is one of the top North of England advertising agencies, and manages diverse brands such as Yorkshire Building Society, Crown Paints and British Airways. The goal for the day was for students to develop a new brand for a milk product.

The students gained an industry insight on how to recommend a target market for the brand, devise a brand name and slogan, and then pitch their ideas to a potential client. On this occasion the ‘potential clients’ were the college head of Business, Karen Hunter, and Deputy Principal Jenny Worsdale, who gladly stepped in to help create a ‘real life’ feel to the presentation.

Students were unanimous in their praise for the session, “It was a great experience seeing someone who has done well in their life, it made me feel I can do it too”, said former Waterhead Academy pupil, Aqib Hussain. Anthony Scaife, former Droylsden Academy pupil, said, “It was really different and has helped me to be more confident”.

Shona summarised her visit: “I am very impressed with the behaviour and the professionalism of the students. They came up with some original and imaginative brand ideas and their presentation skills were great”.
