SCI-FI Saturday

SCI-FI Saturday

Tameside College was contacted by local charity group, 'Hyde Fundraisers' and asked to help them create a replica of Dr Who's TARDIS console for an upcoming Sci-Fi event.

Students and tutors across departments, including Carpentry & Joinery, Engineering and Painting & Decorating got involved with the project to produce the challenging piece and together they produced an amazing exhibit.

The TARDIS console, constructed from MDF and painted to match the original is fitted with a range of electronic dials and controls which were kindly donated by former physics teacher, Kevin Davies. The piece was completed with an authentic transparent column supplied by 'Plastic Formers' of Denton.

Carpentry and Joinery teacher , Dean Donelon, said "The students embraced this challenging project which really helped them practice the techniques they are learning as part of their course".

Engineering teacher,  Joseph Boughey,  said "It was a great project for the students to work on, it gave them an opportunity to apply their maths skills to accurately position and fit the instruments in the console panels".

Hyde Fundraisers plan to display the console at future exhibitions and the college hopes to display the piece in its new Advanced Technology Centre which is nearing completion.

The SCi-Fi Saturday event held at Stalybridge Civic Hall raised over £1,500 for local and national charities including Children in Need, Reuben’s Retreat and Willow Wood Hospice.
