Sheriff of Manchester has high aspirations for students

Tameside College was honoured with a visit from the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Kui Man Gerry Yeung OBE DL to talk to catering and hospitality students about his role and his career in the restaurant industry.
After holding many official offices and titles as well as doing charitable work in the community, he was given the honour of becoming the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester by the Queen.
Gerry started his career in his father’s restaurant in 1977 which was voted the best restaurant in England by the Good Food Guide in 1983. Gerry continued the family business which he has successfully expanded after taking over from his father.
Gerry spoke to level two and three students about his career as owner of the Yang Sing restaurant chain and his role as High Sheriff, before taking questions from the students.
He also met Tameside College Principal, Jackie Moores who officially welcomed him to the college and took a short tour of the catering facilities on site.
The Yang Sing restaurant chain, for which Gerry is well known for, began life as his father’s company in 1977 and by 1983 was voted the best restaurant in England by the Good Food Guide. He worked his way up from front of house staff member, to owner and director of the company.
Gerry gave advice to the students during his speech: “The restaurant industry is more about the customer experience than the food alone. If you listen to customers, you are able to improve your business and earn their trust. Attention to detail is also important in the industry but to succeed you need to innovate. Be brave and bold, be disciplined and determined and believe in yourself above all.”
Jackie Moores, Principal of Tameside College, said: “It was a pleasure to meet the High Sheriff and his wife during their visit. Gerry has so much experience in the food industry and for students to hear from someone like that in person is such a great opportunity. I hope that they take a lot away from the visit and use it to their advantage for the future.”
Students will visit Gerry’s restaurant at the Trafford Centre in the coming months.
