Yasmeen scores a goal for female sport

Tameside College student Yasmeen selected for prestigious sports leadership programme for females.

Yasmeen Zaman, a former Great Academy Ashton pupil and current sports student at the college, has been selected by the AoC Sport (Association of Colleges) to take part in their ‘Rising Leader Programme’.

The Rising Leader Programme aims to support young black, Asian and ethnic minority females to take up a career in sport or a related role by helping them to; build communication and leadership skills, motivate them to achieve and train them to plan and deliver various activities.

Yasmeen, who was nominated by Mark Pollitt, enrichment coordinator at Tameside College, will now take part in bespoke leadership training, hear talks from guest speakers across the Football Association’s (FA) network, a networking opportunity with wider FA youth leadership groups and VIP treatment at the Women’s FA Cup Final in May.

Yasmeen combines her passion for football by playing in the college’s women’s team and as a volunteer coach at Manchester United Foundation. Yasmeen is the lead ‘game changer’ in the borough of Tameside where she inspires girls to take up football.

Yasmeen said: “I really didn’t expect to be accepted onto the Rising Leader Programme, so I am really pleased and excited to get started with it. I definitely think it will benefit my career as it’s what I want to do when I leave the college. The Women’s FA Cup Final will be a real treat too.”

In the future Yasmeen hopes to go on to become a children’s football coach and work with local organisations to increase female participation in sport. It’s estimated by Sport England that in the past five years the number of girls playing football in the UK has grown by over 100,000.

Mark said: “Yasmeen is committed to football and is already helping people younger than herself enjoy the game. I put her forward for this programme because I believe it will give her even more direction in this effort and I am so pleased that she has been accepted. Her hard work has paid off and I’m sure she has a fantastic career in football ahead of her.”
