The UK’s top students and apprentices will be going for gold in Ashton-under-Lyne this November after Tameside College was chosen to host the prestigious WorldSkills UK National Finals.
Tameside College will host WorldSkills UK competitions in automotive and engineering on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th November.
Designed by industry experts, the WorldSkills UK competitions develop participants’ technical and employability skills and are even likely to provide a salary boost. Research by Frontier Economics found that young people who have been involved with WorldSkills UK competitions earn around 60% more than their peers who have not taken part.
Jackie Moores, principal and CEO at Tameside College, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the WorldSkills UK national finals at Tameside College. We have enjoyed a strong tradition in hosting and taking part in skills competitions across Greater Manchester, the UK and Europe. This autumn, we welcomed the return of two students who competed at EuroSkills in Gdansk and a further three students have qualified for WorldSkills UK national finals.”
“The spirit of competition raises students’ aspirations and in turn their performance and resilience. By hosting the WorldSkills UK national finals we can inspire students by showing them what it means to be the best. During the week, the standards demonstrated by the competitors will set the benchmark for everyone to emulate.”
Andy Burnham, Greater Manchester Mayor said: “We are working hard in Greater Manchester to create opportunities for young people to develop high-level technical skills. WorldSkills UK along with the idea of a Greater Manchester Baccalaureate for technical education are helping us to achieve our ambitious plans to ensure young people in the city-region are given the tools they need to achieve their career aspirations. We are all really excited that we will be welcoming students and apprentices from across the UK to showcase the very best of their skills and inspire young people in the region.”
The winners will be announced at Bridgewater Hall on Friday 17 November.
