Three’s a charm for WorldSkills UK students

Three Tameside College students take top prizes in WorldSkills UK national finals.

Natalie Godfrey, Dylan Philips and Matthew Coutts were awarded silver medals in the nationwide competition.

The prestigious event, which was hosted at colleges across Greater Manchester, including Tameside College, is a national skills competition to find the best talent in a wide range of subject areas and develop young peoples’ careers goals.

Natalie, a former beauty therapy student at the college who is now studying at university, came in second place in the commercial makeup category. Her winning design focused on the theme of ‘centuries of glam’.

Despite a setback during the competition, which meant she needed to recruit a new makeup model, Natalie managed to create a successful design.

Matthew and Dylan, who competed as a team, were jointly awarded second place. During the competition they needed to design, build and test a pneumatic and electronic system for automated production.

All three students were presented with their medals at the competition awards ceremony at Bridgewater Hall on Friday 17th November.

Jackie Moores, principal and CEO at Tameside College, said: “Natalie, Matthew and Dylan have come a very long way, progressing through several heats and for them to all achieve second place in a nationwide competition is amazing. Everyone at the college is incredibly proud of them.”

“This just goes to show the college’s commitment to helping students to excel in their chosen career and adds to our already prestigious history within WorldSkills competitions.”

Natalie said: “It’s amazing to get so far in the competition and even get a medal. My teacher and other college staff have been incredibly supportive and encouraging with my studies and pushing me to challenge myself with WorldSkills UK. She has been brilliant over the past two years; teaching and helping me to progress.”
