Students raise much needed funds for vital local theatre group

Students hand cheque to local theatre group after raising money with Christmas markets.

Health, social care and early years students at Tameside College donated £771 to Behind the Curtains, a theatre group for adults with additional needs.

A cheque for the proceeds, which were raised during students’ annual Christmas markets, was handed over earlier this month.

Each year students host a Christmas market on the college campus with a host of activities including a tombola, bake sale and themed games. The market forms a key part of their coursework and helps them develop skills relevant to their qualification, whilst also raising funds for local good causes.

Behind the Curtains, which is organised and ran by Tameside College staff members, provides weekly drama sessions for adults who have learning difficulties and additional support needs. The funds will now allow the group to continue to run for another year and provide the vital sessions.

Cate Daly-Greenham, one of the Behind the Curtains founders and high needs coordinator for Tameside College, said: “Thank you so much to the students and staff involved for donating these funds. We have been running for a year now and this money will keep us going for another year, helping to pay for rent and equipment etc., which is massive for our members. The group was formed as there is very little in the way of social groups in the local area for people with additional needs. It is great that the staff involved are part of a team effort and have experience in this area too. Well done to the students for putting in an amazing effort for us.”
