Students and staff step up to give the gift of Christmas
Mon, 16 December 2024
Students and staff at Tameside College pull out all the stops to provide gifts for children in poverty this Christmas.
The college has collected over 150 gifts and toys for the annual Tameside Toy Appeal, which aims to ensure every child in the local area wakes up to a present on Christmas morning.
Floristry students raised £180 for the appeal by donating a days’ worth of sales from their shop, whilst public services and sports students raised £155 after completing a distance challenge in the college’s gym and a ‘sports shirt’ day.
The donations were then used by college staff to purchase a range of gifts for young children and teenagers.
Each year the appeal is organised in partnership between local charity Action Together and Tameside Council, providing over 1,000 children in poverty with gifts each year. The fundraiser has become an annual tradition at the college and this year has been the most successful yet.
Denni Bates, administrator and appeal organiser at Tameside College, said: “At Tameside College, we’re passionate about making a difference in the community and the Tameside Toy Appeal is a cause that’s very close to our hearts. Many of our students are young people themselves and through this appeal, they’re supporting children their own age and possibly even peers, not just younger children. Seeing everyone come together to raise so much and donate gifts has been amazing. We hope this contribution brings smiles to children’s faces this Christmas."
Action Together will now collect the gifts from the college, ready to be distributed to local children’s centres across the borough.
