28 miles challenge raises funds for vital charity

Tameside College public services students raise money for vital charity with month long challenge.

Students have been taking part in the ’28 miles In February’ challenge, which aims to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK, a charity which conducts research into cures for the disease and supports family members affected by it.

The challenge asks volunteers to complete 28 miles walking, running, cycling or swimming. Throughout February, the students have taken turns to organise and lead hikes in the local area, as part of the challenge and gather sponsors.

Students have already raised £115 for the charity and are aiming to raise even more before the challenge ends.

Alongside helping raise funds, the challenge has helped students develop their map reading, fitness and leadership, vital skills for a career in the armed forces or emergency services.

Samantha Ashton, public services teacher at Tameside College, said: “Engaging in this fundraiser has been great for all involved. We have all actively been getting outdoors which is great for mental health, not just fitness. It is also great fun seeing who can walk or run the furthest each week, whilst doing something for an amazing charity which conducts vital work. I’m very proud of our students for getting involved.”
