Students work with police to develop new strategy

Tameside College students take part in unique design event to bridge the gap between young people and the police.
The event, ‘addressing young people’s perception of the police’, brought students from across the curriculum together in the college’s Restaurant at Tameside One, to work alongside designers, police officers and mentors to explore how the digital world could help to improve trust between young people and the police.
Organised in partnership with Greater Manchester Police and AXON, the event gave students a chance to develop a digital solution to the issue in teams. The students conducted user research, developed prototypes and then finally presented their ideas to guests.
The event also helped students develop a wide range of skills including communication, teamwork, creative thinking, and problem solving, alongside allowing them to explore a potential future career in the creative and digital industry.
Jodie McCormick, assistant principal at Tameside College, said: "Events like this provide a powerful platform for our students to engage in meaningful, real world discussions and develop solutions to issues that matter. It was inspiring to see so many young people working creatively, confidently and collaboratively throughout the day. They showed real professionalism and innovation qualities that will benefit them in any future career."
Events such as this are a key part of the college’s curriculum, giving students experience outside of the classroom and exposure to other view points and aspects of life.
