Level 3 Engineering

The BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Engineering is a full time study programme. This is the first year of study that leads to a BTEC National Extended Diploma in year 2. (which is equivalent to 3 A levels)

During the two years there are 15 units of which 7 are mandatory and 3 are externally assessed. You will learn through a variety of teaching methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles for example, case studies, assessments, group work, practical work, projects and extended writing.

The units that are externally assessed, Engineering Principles, Engineering Product Design and Manufacture. The rest of the units are assessed internally.

In the first year of study (BTEC National Foundation Diploma) you will undertake the following units:

●  Engineering Principles

●  Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team

●  Engineering Product Design and Manufacture

●  Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering

●  Computer Aided Design in Engineering

●  Pneumatic and Hydraulic System

●  Industrial Robotics

In the Second year of study (BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering) you will complete the following units:

●  A specialist Engineering Project

●  Microcontroller Systems for Engineers

●  Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems

●  Electronic Printed Circuit Board Design and Manufacture

●  Mechanical Behaviour of Metallic Materials

●  Programmable Logic Controllers

●  Computer Aided Manufacturing and Planning

●  Manufacturing Computer Numerical Control Machining Processes
This course covers a wide variation of the Engineering Sector. The course combines theoretical learning with the opportunity to develop specific practical skills. It provides an enjoyable experience for those with an interest in science and maths along with its challenges of different engineering career paths.

This qualification has been designed as a two-year, full-time course that meets entry requirements in its own right for learners wanting to progress to employment in engineering. Learners gain relevant skills and knowledge from studying a range of content focused on electrical/electronic and mechanical disciplines, for example Microcontroller Systems and Manufacturing Computer Numerical Control Machining Processes.
Level 3 (Advanced)

- 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including Mathematics and English.

You will be interviewed for this course, should be enthusiastic about working in Engineering sector and able to participate in work experience.
Engineering Principles, Engineering Product Design & Manufacture and Microcontroller Systems for Engineers are assessed externally by Pearson BTEC. All the other units will be assessed internally at Tameside College.

This is a graded course where you can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction for each unit and an overall grade in the range PPP to D*D*D*.
On completion of the BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering, you will be able to progress onto:

●  A programme of study at University at undergraduate level

●  A HNC/D in either electrical or mechanical engineering

●  Employment within the Engineering sector

●  An Apprenticeship or a Higher Education Apprenticeship
