Level 1 Animal Studies
Course content & format
This course is designed to be completed over one year which will help to give learners the opportunity to develop a range of transferable skills such as English, Mathematics, ICT, communication and working with others that can be applied to the land-based sector and support progression onto further study. You will experience a range of theoretical and practical activities including classroom-based learning, setting up an event of your choice to raise money for your chosen animal welfare charity, growing your own vegetation to give to our animals in the animal centre and conduct your own research project on an animal of your choice.
Throughout the course, you will study a range of topics including:
● Finding out about the Land-Based Sector
● Researching a Topic
● Caring for and Feeding Animals
● Moving and Accommodating Animals
● Preparing Soil for Planting
● Growing Plants
● Caring for and Keeping Plants Healthy
Your learning experience
You will be taught by a number of tutors with real life experience in the Land-Based Sector and a Progress Tutor who will work with you to look after your academic study and pastoral needs.
Learners are given the opportunity to attend a number of field trips throughout the course such as Chester and Blackpool Zoo, Blue Planet Aquarium, visit farms and an end of the year reward trip. These trips are to help build on our learners’ knowledge which they can apply to their course work, but it is also for a fun day out.
There are opportunities for learners to interact with guest speakers from the PDSA, Blue Cross and other organisations to find out more about their life experiences and what it is really like working in these sectors.
You will have the opportunity to get hands on with the animals in our very own animal centre. These practical sessions coincide with your theoretical learning. Throughout the course, you will learn how to properly meet the needs for each animal we have on site by completing various tasks such as cleaning and maintaining a range of animal accommodations by providing it with the correct substrate, enrichment and housing, feeding animals the appropriate dietary requirements and ensuring the animals are healthy by providing regular health checks.
Entry qualifications
No formal entry requirements are required, but a range of 3 GCSE grades from 1-3 would be beneficial. You will be asked to attend an interview for this course. Tutors expect their candidates to be enthusiastic about animals and be prepared to embark on a journey to learn all about them in preparation for further education.
How is this course assessed?
You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including presentations, practical tasks, keeping logbooks and written tasks. This is a graded course where you can achieve a double Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.
What can I do next?
On successful completion of the course, you can progress for further learning on the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Studies course.
You can also complete another Level 1 qualification at the college if you decide the Animal Sector is not for you.
