Level 2 Animal Studies

This course is designed to be completed over one year which will help to give learners the opportunity to provide training and education for those who are interested in further education or employment within the environmental, animal husbandry and Land-Based sectors. It also gives learners the opportunity to develop a range of transferable and personal skills and attributes that are essential for successful performance in the working world or further education after completion of the course. You will experience a range of theoretical and practical activities including classroom-based learning, giving your pet first aid care, conducting biological experiments, specialist care of exotic animals and be involved with a comprehensive work experience programme of your preference within the animal industry.

Throughout the course, you will study a range of topics including:

●  Animal Health and Welfare

●  Practical Animal Feeding

●  Maintain Animal Accommodation
You will be taught by a number of tutors with real life experience in the animal and environmental sector and a Progress Tutor who will work with you to look after your academic study and pastoral needs.

Learners are given the opportunity to attend a number of field trips throughout the course such as Chester and Blackpool Zoo, Blue Planet Aquarium, visit farms and an end of the year reward trip. These trips are to help build on our learners’ knowledge which they can apply to their course work, but it is also for a fun day out.

You will have the opportunity to get hands on with the animals in our very own animal centre. These practical sessions coincide with your theoretical learning. Throughout the course, you will learn how to properly meet the needs for each animal we have on site by completing various tasks such as cleaning and maintaining a range of animal accommodations by providing it with the correct substrate, enrichment and housing, feeding animals the appropriate dietary requirements and ensuring the animals are healthy by providing regular health checks.

You will be actively involved with the comprehensive work experience programme where you must complete 150 hours at a range of organisations within the animal sector. It could be at a dog groomer, doggy day care centres, veterinary practices, charity organisations, animal sanctuaries and many more.
Learners are required to have 3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above. Mathematics, English and Science would be beneficial. You will be asked to attend an interview with course tutors. Tutors expect their candidates to be enthusiastic about animals and be prepared to embark on a journey to learn all about them in preparation for employment or further education.
You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including written assignments, presentations, practical tasks. It is vital that you complete 150 working hours in your chosen work experience placement to pass the qualification. This is a graded course where you can achieve a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.
On successful completion of the course, you can progress for further learning to Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management.

Those who do not wish to pursue the Level 3 can go into employment with various industries in the animal sector such as doggy day care centres, animal sanctuaries and pet shops. Learners can also apply for apprenticeships and internships with various wildlife parks and zoos.
