Level 2 Animal Studies

This is a full time study programme. The primary ways that you will be assessed will be through a theory exam and a synoptic assessment, these assessments will incorporate content from the four primary units that will be covered in the first part of the year: Animal Health and Welfare, Animal Feeding and Accommodation, Animal Behaviour and Handling and Working in the Animal Care Industry. The content from all of these modules will be included within the theory exam and learners will be expected to discuss the content covered during a practical observation as part of the synoptic assessment.

You will also be expected to carry out 150 hours of external work experience as part of this course in order to gain your qualification.

Throughout the course you will study 8 units in total. These include:

Maintain Animal Health and Welfare, Animal Feeding and Accommodation, Animal Behaviour and Handling, Working in the Animal Care Industry, The Principles of Animal Biology, British Wildlife Species, Habitats and Rehabilitation, Caring for Zoo Animals, Health and Safety for Land Based Industries.
You will also take part in several trips to places such as Chester Zoo

We work closely with the local Stamford Park Boating Lake and offer enrichment opportunities throughout the year. We have also run pet first aid sessions in previous years to develop skills that can be useful in real-life situations.

If you are interested in working with animals and wish to make a difference in people and animal’s lives, then this course could be for you. Animal Care is vital in many different animal related industries. You could be looking to work with different varieties of animals, mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, birds and invertebrates. Working in a multitude of differing animal related careers and this course could be the first step to towards achieving this goal.

This animal care course provides a broad range of learning towards both the theory and the practical related content whilst also helping to support the different needs that our learners may have. This course also helps to prepare for a selection of career pathways that could include working in industries such as animal nursing, wildlife, farm animals, pet shops, aquatics to name a few.

The combination of theory and practical content will provide you with the knowledge and skills to move towards your chosen goal.

· You will undertake weekly work experience in an animal related industry, you will be responsible for acquiring and attending your placement.

· You will gain sector specific knowledge and experience from guest speakers and educational visits
Level 2 (Intermediate)

- 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above. Including a 4 or above in biology/science

You will be interviewed for this course, should be enthusiastic about working in the animal management sector and able to participate in work experience.
· The primary methods of assessment will be through the synoptic assessment and the theory exam that will occur in March.

· You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including discussions, displays, case studies, presentations, extended written work and practical assessments.

· There will also be a health and safety component that requires a short examination to pass the unit.

· A mandatory part of your course is 150 hours of external work placement

This is a graded course where you can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction
On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto:

· On completion of level 2 the next step for progression will be to move up to Level 3 which is the equivalent to 2 A levels. This will enable you to enter University at undergraduate level and study a wide range of animal related degrees such as zoology, veterinary nursing, animal behaviour to list a few.

· Employment within the Animal Care sector, for example as a dog groomer, working in a kennel/cattery, dog day care. Other technician roles will be available as well upon completion of Level 2

· Apprenticeships are also available
