Level 2 Early Years
Course content & format
This is a full time study programme. You are also required to attend a mandatory placement setting for a minimum of 250 hours (1 day a week), which will allow you to gain a real life insight into this sector. You must secure a placement in an early years/nursery setting with children aged between 0-5 years. A dedicated placement assessor will assess you whilst in your setting. You will learn through a variety of teaching methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles. Units are assessed internally by subject specialist teachers and assessors, there are no exams for this course.
Throughout the course you will study 14 units in total. These include:
Communication,
Child and Young Person Development,
Safeguarding the Welfare of Children and Young People
Support Positive Environments for Children and Young People.
In order for you to attend your weekly placement you will undergo an enhanced DBS check.
Your learning experience
If you are interested in making a difference in children’s lives with a rewarding career in Early Years, then this is the course for you. Early Years education is a starting point for children’s development and plays an important role in their lives. If you have a passion to contribute to children’s learning in their early years, this qualification could be the first step on that exciting journey. Early Years provides a broad-based learning around the physical, intellectual, language and emotional and social aspects of children preparing you for a variety of career options. This is a practical and academic qualification that will give you the knowledge and skills to move forward towards your goal.
You will undertake a weekly work placement in an early years setting to ensure you gain sector specific knowledge and experience. Guest speakers will be invited in to aid the development of your knowledge and experience from a different perspective.
Entry qualifications
4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above
You will be interviewed by the subject teacher. You should be enthusiastic about working with children and young people and able to participate in work experience.
How is this course assessed?
You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including discussions, presentations, written work, observations and practical assessments within the classroom and whilst on placement. A mandatory part of your course is a minimum of 250 hours of external work placement. This course is graded as a pass or a fail. All elements must be achieved to succeed.
What can I do next?
On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto:
● Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification
● Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Early Years
● Any other relevant Level 3 qualification, for example teaching assistant
● Employment as a qualified level 2 Early Years Practitioner in roles such as, a nursery practitioner, a classroom assistant or a pre-school practitioner
