Level 1 Introduction to Public Services
This course aims to prepare you initially, to develop the skills and qualities to return on the Level 2 Diploma the following year. Some students may feel that they are ready to apply and join their uniformed service of choice. You will engage in various activities such as classroom learning, physical fitness training, outdoor adventures, and a comprehensive work experience program with different Uniformed Service organizations. The topics covered include:
Unit 1 – Investigate Employment
Unit 2 – Well-being and Physical Fitness
Unit 3 – Teamworking Skills
Unit 4 – Developing Self-discipline
Unit 5 - Health and Safety
Unit 6 – Map Reading & Navigation
Unit 8 – Participate in an Adventurous Activity
Unit 9 – Explore Volunteering
Your tutors have real-life experience in the Uniformed Services, along with a Progress Tutor dedicated to support your pastoral and study needs. Assessments will be diverse, including group discussions, posters, report writing, presentations, photographic and video evidence, and practical outdoor assessments. There are no formal exams for this course.
The course features a comprehensive work experience program involving organizations like the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Royal Marines, Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, and guest speakers, including former students now serving in the Uniformed Services.
Students may have the chance to participate in residential trips, offering a glimpse into life on a military base with the Royal Marines, British Army, or Royal Navy. In addition to this we work closely with the police and take part in public order training on a regular basis.
Students will wear a uniform which is looks similar to what our police officers currently wear including boots which are suitable for our outdoor and off-site activities. At times you could find yourself working on the same activity as learners from other groups so everyone gets the opportunity to gain experience of working with others.
Level 1 (Foundation)
- 3 GCSEs grade 1 or above including English & Maths.
Candidates are required to undertake a pre-course interview and will be expected to be enthusiastic about embarking on a career in the Uniformed Services and engage fully with all aspects of their study programme which includes:

· Discipline
· Personal Development
There are no formal exams on the course so we employ a range of methods of assessment including group discussions, posters, report writing, presentations, photographic & video evidence and a range of practical and outdoor assessments.
This is a graded course where you can achieve a Pass, Merit, or Distinction.
Upon successful completion, you can progress to:
· NCFE Level 2 for Entry to the Uniformed Services
· Apply to join the Uniformed Service of your choice including:
The Armed Forces
The Emergency Services
Part or full-time work in other areas
