Level 1 Cake Decoration
Course content & format
This is an evening study programme. This course is based on practical sessions with coursework booklets to complete. You will learn through a variety of teaching methods such as practical demonstrations, one to one tasks, group tasks and videos. To help your skills blossom practice is the key. Some homework will be required to enhance your skills and complete coursework.
Throughout the course you will study 3 units in total. These include: Explore craft resources Explore craft ideas Create, present and review your final cake decoration item
Your learning experience
Tameside college is renowned for its amazing training facilities. Your lessons will take place in our newly built T1 building, filled with state of the art industry equipment.
If you are interested in learning new skills developed with industry experts. Our long standing cake decoration course will help you build the knowledge and skills to move forward towards your goal.
· You will undertake weekly classes of practical demonstrations and tasks involving how to make various icings and buttercreams, piping skills, modelling, enrobing, colouring, dusting, packing, layering and covering of cakes, cupcakes and biscuits. – Please note this is a cake decorating course as there is limited time the practice base of which you exhibit your skills will be made for you. – If you want to focus on the baking there are short courses available.
· You will gain sector specific knowledge and experience of how to handle, store and use various cake decoration materials and equipment.
· You will get the opportunity to exhibit skills on edible bases as well as polystyrene dummies to build and develop skills over a timely period.
· You will be required to purchase basic equipment and it is encouraged you start to build up your own kit for practicing at home
· You will be required to produce written course work to evidence the developmental process of your skills and creative process.
Entry qualifications
A suitable standard in functional skills (English and maths) and you must have a keen interest in the cake decoration industry. The process for being accepted on the course will also involve an interview with a member of the food team to ensure the course is best suited to the learner’s needs & ability.
How is this course assessed?
· You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods, such as practical assessments, projects, weekly diaries and coursework.
· There is one written project completed throughout the year. For this you will need to research inspiration for a cake project, plan and create a cake demonstrating a multitude of skills and then reflect on this process.
· A mandatory part of your course is to complete a range of cakes decorated in different styles to suit various occasions.
What can I do next?
· On completion of the first year you can progress onto level 2. This will enable you to fine tune your skills built in level 1.
· Employment within the Cake decorating industry
· An Apprenticeship
· Create your own cake businesses supplying cakes for all clients, friends and family.

If you meet the unemployed* criteria or are employed^ where the earnings threshold applies, and you need to study at Entry or Level 1 to progress to Level 2, tuition fees will be waived.
