Level 1 Painting & Decorating

This is a full-time, hands-on course designed to prepare learners for employment or progression within the painting and decorating trade. The course combines classroom-based theory with extensive practical work, providing learners with real-world skills in surface preparation, painting, wallcovering application, and health and safety in a construction environment.

Key units covered include:

Health and safety in a construction environment

Principles of working in the construction industry

Surface preparation for decoration

Application of paints and wallcoverings

Working with access equipment

Learners will complete a formal synoptic practical assignment over 15 hours, based on a realistic decorating scenario involving the preparation and finishing of walls, ceilings, doors, and trim to industry standards.

The course is assessed through a combination of online multiple-choice exams and internally marked practical assignments.
Learners benefit from access to industry-standard workshops, professional tools, and experienced tutors. The programme offers:

Practical, realistic decorating tasks including wallpapering and advanced paint finishes

Guest speakers from the decorating industry and opportunities for site visits

Emphasis on health and safety, with preparation for obtaining a CSCS Green Card

Development of employability and planning skills, including method statements and job preparation techniques

High levels of tutor and peer feedback through quality review checkpoints in every task
4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above

· Level 1 Painting and Decorating qualification

You will be interviewed for this course and should show an interest in practical construction work, classroom studies and a willingness to follow strict health and safety protocols.
On successful completion of this qualification, you can progress to:

· An Apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating

· Employment in the decorating industry as a painter and decorator or junior site operative
