Level 1 Introduction to Computing

"From Clicking to Coding – Learn the Digital Skills That Power the World!" Explore the exciting world of computing through hands-on projects, real-world tasks, and creative challenges. Whether you're building your first website, solving tech problems, or designing digital content, this course gives you the tools and confidence to take your next step in the digital age.

This is a foundation course designed to build practical IT and digital skills, confidence, and employability. While it’s an entry-level qualification, it can open up several career pathways—either through further study or starter roles in tech and related sectors.

Career Pathways (via Further Education or Apprenticeships)

1. IT Support Technician (Apprenticeship or Entry-Level)

· Help users with software, hardware, and network issues.

· Can lead to 1st-line support or service desk roles.

2. Junior Web Developer

· With further study (e.g., BTEC Level 2/3 or coding bootcamps), can start learning HTML, CSS, JavaScript to build websites.

3. Digital Marketing Assistant

· Combines tech skills with creativity—using basic IT knowledge to help with websites, social media, and online content.

4. Data Entry Clerk / Admin Assistant

· Entry-level office jobs that value accuracy, computer literacy, and software use (e.g., spreadsheets, word processing).

5. IT Hardware Technician (Trainee)

· With interest in fixing or upgrading computers, learners can pursue roles in computer repair or setup.

Throughout this full time, 1 year, study programme, you will establish a comprehensive digital strategy to equip you with the right skills for Industry and progression onto the Level 2 course as well as work towards future-proofing your employment opportunities for an as yet undreamt-of workforce in the Global future.

You will engage in a variety of innovative Information Technology and Computing topics which are ideal for students who wish to further their studies at higher levels or begin a career in a growth industry which involves jobs such as social media managers, coders and developers plus network engineers.

Throughout the course you will study 10 units in total. These include:

Base Skills; Being organised; Developing a Personal Progression Plan; Creating a Spreadsheet to Solve Problems; Branding a Product; Designing an Interactive Presentation; Working with others; Researching a topic; Developing digital information using IT; Creating a storyboard; Creating a website.
You will use industry standard development tools such as: Visual Studio, Adobe Creative Suite, Office 365. An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will be designed with you, to meet your needs and targets will be set to enable your progress and achievement will be tracked and monitored.

You will be assigned a Personal Tutor and a Progress Tutor who specifically look after your pastoral and progress requirements throughout the course.

You will also be exposed to a variety of industry experts and guest speakers. You will have the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with your peers mirroring current industry practice such as Agile development.
GCSE grades at 1 or 2 above. Evidence of previous work or a commitment to study will be required. You will be interviewed for this course and should be enthusiastic about working in the computing sector and able to participate in work experience. If you have not achieved a Grade 4 in your GCSE maths and/or GCSE English Language, you must continue working towards achieving these GCSE qualifications. If you have achieved a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in maths and/or English, you are no longer required to continue to study and work towards achieving your GCSE Grade 4 in maths and/or English.
All units are ‘paperless’ with assignment submission, marking and feedback all provided through our VLE (virtual learning environment), and Microsoft Teams. We use a wide range of assessment methods such as discussions, presentations, written work, video and audio evidence.
Once you have completed this qualification, you'll have developed the good basic understanding of these skills and will have the opportunity to progress onto a Level 2 course in either Business or Computing. From there you will be able to build on your knowledge and abilities, working towards a number of exciting and dynamic roles in the computing or business industry.

On successful completion of the Level 1 Computing qualification, you will be able to progress onto our one-year Level 2 Computing qualification.

From Level 2, you can progress onto: T-Levels in Digital Production or IT Support (2 years)
