Level 3 Sport Coaching
Course content & format
This full-time course is designed to equip you with the skills, knowledge and practical understanding needed for a successful career in coaching sport and physical activity. Over two years, you will complete 18 specialist units that prepare you to plan, deliver and evaluate effective sports sessions with confidence.
You’ll work with modern performance analysis technology, gain experience in designing training programmes, and develop a strong grasp of the sport and physical activity industry. The course provides a solid foundation to progress onto university or step directly into employment within the sector.
Assessment is varied and engaging, including practical delivery of coaching sessions, written coursework, presentations and collaborative group tasks. Units covered include:
· Anatomy and Physiology
· Fitness Training
· Sports Coaching
· Performance Analysis
· Practical Sport
A key part of the programme is our compulsory work placement element. This gives you the opportunity to apply your learning in real-world environments, ensuring you leave college not just qualified, but career-ready. We are proud to support our learners in gaining the experience needed to progress seamlessly into Higher Education or employment.

If sport is your passion and you enjoy working with others, this course offers the perfect environment to develop your confidence, broaden your experiences and prepare for a future in the sports industry.
As a Sports Coaching learner, you’ll benefit from a dynamic and varied learning experience that goes far beyond the classroom. You’ll take part in practical sessions across a range of environments.
You’ll have the opportunity to:
· Plan and deliver high-quality coaching sessions across multiple sports
· Explore the use of modern technology such as GoPros and iPads to capture performance
· Analyse data and feedback in our lab to help athletes improve
· Learn in small groups, through hands-on sessions and peer-led activities
To bring your learning to life, you’ll take part in exciting industry-based experiences, including:
· University visits to Manchester Metropolitan University and UA92
· Industry insight days with employers such as Active Tameside
· Site visits to professional sports venues and facilities
· Guest speakers from across the sporting world including local employers
· Adventure-based trips, including activities like rock climbing, kayaking and ice skating
You’ll also complete a weekly work placement, gaining valuable real-world experience that will boost your employability and support your progression into higher education or the workplace.
To take part in all activities, including placements, a DBS check will be required at the start of the course. In order to reflect real-world employment all learners will be expected to wear college sports uniform to all classes.
Entry qualifications
Level 3 (Advanced)
- 4 GCSEs grade 4 or above including Mathematics and English.
You will be interviewed for this course and require DBS clearance, you should be enthusiastic about working in the sport and physical activity sector and able to participate in work experience.

This course is designed to support different learning styles and make your experience as engaging and rewarding as possible — with no external exams.
You’ll be assessed through a wide range of innovative and interactive methods, including:
· Podcasts and audio reflections
· Gamified learning activities
· Case studies and scenario-based tasks
· Class discussions and group projects
· Practical assessments and real-world tasks
· Presentations, written reports and visual displays
Learning will take place in the classroom, virtually through our online platforms, and out on work placement — giving you the chance to apply your skills in a variety of real-life environments.
As part of your assessment, you’ll need to give permission for photographic and video evidence to be captured and shared with the awarding body to support your practical achievements.
This is a graded qualification where you can achieve Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*, recognising the full breadth of your knowledge and effort across all aspects of the course.
