Teaching Assistant Level 3, part time evening
Course content & format
This is a part time 1 year programme. This course requires you to attend college one day or one evening per week and you will need to attend your placement setting for a minimum of 150 hours per year. Throughout the course you will develop a range of skills and knowledge preparing you for progression into employment within the schools or college sector. All units are assessed internally by subject teachers. Over the 1 year duration of this course, you will cover a variety of topics that link to working with children in schools and colleges.
You will undertake weekly work experience as a volunteer teaching assistant in a school or college setting, where you will gain sector specific knowledge, the opportunity to meet and work alongside experienced professionals in setting, whilst networking with other professionals.
On completing the 11 units you will achieve the Certificate qualification, completion of 16 units will achieve the Diploma qualification. The Diploma is suited to individuals who are already in employment in schools or colleges.
The topics covered are:
● Schools as organisations.
● Safeguarding, health and safety and communication.
● Support English and maths skills.
● Support the use of ICT in the classroom.
● Supporting child development.
Your learning experience
This course is for learners who would like to work with children in a school or college setting working with children aged 5-19 years as a teaching assistant or learning support assistant.
On this 1 year course you will develop your skill set exploring the roles and responsibilities and possible career progression routes. You will develop the core skills required for work routes in a school or college setting.
You are required to have a disclosure and barring service check (DBS); this allows you to access the work experience that is required to develop your skill set within a school or college setting.
As part of the course you will be required to attend a mandatory placement, this will be for a minimum of one day per week. A dedicated placement assessor will support you while you gain hands-on work based industry skills; this allows you to gain a real life insight into the sector. Alongside the course, you will also attend visits and trips to support and enhance your classroom delivery. Subject teachers have industry experience which is shared with learners. This provides a stimulating learning environment and promotes positive learning. The course will also help develop those all-important employability skills that will help you decide on your career path.
Entry qualifications
Learners should have mathematics and/or English at grade 4 or equivalent, such as a level 2 TA qualifications. You will have the opportunity to re-sit your English and mathematics alongside your Supporting Teaching and Learning course (if you do not already have grade 4) as these will be expected for employment in schools or colleges. You will be interviewed by the subject teachers and should be enthusiastic about working with children.
How is this course assessed?
You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including discussions, role plays, case studies, presentations and written work. All work is assessed internally by the subject teachers with the course being graded as pass/fail. Throughout the year, learners will be observed in placement by a qualified assessor. This will be conducted to assure each learner is competent in working within a school or college setting.

On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto:
● Advanced Practitioner in Schools and Colleges (Teaching Assistance), Level 4 (Higher)
● Foundation Degree in Teaching Assistance/Early years
● Employment within the school sector.
