1) Introduction to Bookkeeping
This unit provides students with an understanding of manual and digital bookkeeping systems, including the associated documents and processes. Students will learn the basic principles that underpin double-entry bookkeeping systems.
Percentage contribution of this unit to the overall qualification grade: 25%.
2) Principles of Bookkeeping Controls
This unit builds on the knowledge and skills acquired from studying Introduction to Bookkeeping and explores control accounts, journals and reconciliations. Students will develop the ability to prepare the value added tax (VAT) control accounts as well as the receivables and payables ledger accounts. They'll use the journal to record a variety of transactions, including the correction errors. Students will be able to redraft the initial trial balance, following adjustments.
Percentage contribution of this unit to the overall qualification grade: 25%.
3) Principles of Costing
This unit gives students an introduction to the principles of basic costing and builds a solid foundation in the knowledge and skills required for more complex costing and management accounting tasks. Students will learn the importance of the costing system as a source of information that allows management to plan, make decisions and control costs.
Percentage contribution of this unit to the overall qualification grade: 20%.
4) The Business Environment
This unit provides knowledge and understanding of key business concepts and their practical application in the external and internal environment in which students will work. Students will gain an understanding of the legal system and principles of contract law and an appreciation of the legal implications of setting up a business and the consequences this may have. This unit will also give an understanding of how organisations are structured and where the finance function fits.
Percentage contribution of this unit to the overall qualification grade: 30%.
The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or finance. You will develop skills in double-entry bookkeeping and will understand how to use journals, control accounts and a trial balance.
You will also learn how to use an accounting software package, how to process financial information in accordance with company procedures and schedules, and how to provide information to colleagues, suppliers and/or customers.
You are expected to have achieved GCSE Maths Grade 4/C or above; GCSE English Language at grade 4/C or above is desirable.
When you're studying an AAT qualification your knowledge and skills will be tested via computer-based assessments (CBAs).
All AAT qualifications are evaluated through externally marked exams conducted at our AAT exam centre.
They are marked in one of three ways:
● Wholly computer marked, and so results will be available automatically
● Partially computer marked and partially human marked, and so results will be available within six weeks
● Wholly human marked, and so results will be available within six weeks.
For the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting qualification, you'll need to sit a synoptic assessment. This tests your understanding of connections between the different topics covered across the qualification and is sat towards the end of the year. Results for the synoptic assessment are released online six weeks after submission.
The accountancy skills developed by studying this qualification will enable a student to seek employment with confidence and/or to progress to the next level of learning.
The finance, accountancy, business and communications skills developed in the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting can lead to employment as:
● an accounts administrator
● an accounts assistant
● an accounts payable clerk
● a purchase/sales ledger clerk
● a trainee accounting technician
● a trainee finance assistant
The accountancy and finance knowledge developed in this qualification is also the underpinning knowledge needed for the higher-level accountancy and financial skills developed in the AAT Advanced and Professional Accounting Qualifications:
● Level 3 AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting
● Level 4 AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting

If you are aged 19-23 and don’t meet the unemployed criteria, and already hold a qualification equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, tuition fees are payable.
If you are aged 19-23 and do not already hold a qualification equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, full fees are payable.
If you are aged 24+ and meet the unemployed criteria, or earn less than £25,000 annual gross salary, tuition fees will be waived.
If you are aged 24+ and don’t meet the unemployed criteria, or you earn more than £25,000 annual gross salary, tuition fees are payable.
