If you are passionate about health, well-being, and social care and want to develop the skills and knowledge needed for a career in the health and social care sector, this course is for you. The Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) in Health & Social Care provides a comprehensive and applied learning experience, preparing students for higher education or careers in health, social work, and allied professions.
This course equips students with a strong foundation in health sciences, human development, and social care principles, making it an ideal choice for those looking to progress into nursing, midwifery, social work, physiotherapy, and other healthcare roles.
Your learning experience
Human Lifespan and Development (Externally Assessed Exam)
This unit explores physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development across different life stages. Students will examine the impact of genetics, lifestyle, environment, and health inequalities on individual development. The unit also looks at the role of health and social care professionals in supporting people through different life stages.
Human Biology and Health (Externally Assessed Exam)
This unit covers the structure and function of the human body, exploring different body systems and how they interact. Students will gain an understanding of common health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and dementia, as well as how these conditions impact daily life and care requirements.
Principles of Health and Social Care Practice (Internally Assessed Coursework)
Students will explore the core principles, values, and ethics in health and social care settings. This unit covers the legal and policy frameworks that govern health and social care practice and examines how social determinants influence an individual's health and access to services.
Health Science (Internally Assessed Coursework)
This unit investigates the role of health sciences in diagnosing and preventing diseases. Students will study infection control, epidemiology, and global health concerns while developing skills in analysing health data and conducting research in healthcare settings.
Entry qualifications
- Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Mathematics.
- A strong interest in health and social care.
- Commitment to independent learning and coursework-based assessments.
- An interview may be required as part of the application process.
How is this course assessed?
- 50% exam-based assessment, including two externally assessed written exams.
- 50% coursework-based assessment.
- Final grade awarded as Pass, Merit, Distinction, or Distinction*.
