English Level 1 Functional Skills
This is a part-time study programme. You will learn through a variety of teaching methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles, for example: group work, practical work, homework, classroom activities, extended work and interactive activities.
Throughout the course you will study 3 units in total. These are:
Reading: read with accuracy straightforward texts encountered in everyday life and work and develop confidence to read more widely.
Writing: write straightforward texts and documents with clarity and effectiveness, and demonstrate a sound grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Speaking, Listening and Communication: listen, understand and respond to verbal communication in a range of familiar contexts.
You will attend class once a week for 2 ½ hours. You will also be required to complete tasks at home to support your studies.

If required, we can offer support in the classroom
No formal English qualification is required. However, you will be assessed at the start of the course to ensure you are on the right English pathway for your current level.
You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including quizzes, discussions, peer assessment, displays, presentations, questioning and extended written work.
There will be 3 exams: speaking and listening, reading and writing.
On successful completion of this qualification, you can progress onto:
