Department Information
Use colour, texture and imagination to create beautiful arrangements through Floristry at Tameside College. This practical subject area introduces the skills behind designing and working with flowers, whether you want to develop a new hobby or explore a future in the floral industry. Depending on your course, you could learn about different flowers and foliage, conditioning and care, colour combinations, design principles, hand-tied bouquets, wired designs and seasonal arrangements. Floristry blends creativity with technical precision: knowing how to prepare materials, balance a design and work efficiently is just as important as having good ideas.
At the college's Beaufort Road campus, floristry students can take part in hands-on sessions using floral materials and specialist tools to develop their techniques. Introductory floral workshops are also offered through community learning at Old Street and other venues, depending on the course. Tutor feedback and repeated practical tasks can help you develop confidence and your own visual style.
Suggested careers include florist, floral shop assistant, wedding and event florist, retail display assistant and floral business owner. With further experience and training, you could specialise in event design, funeral tributes or larger commercial installations. Whether you want to make something beautiful for yourself or take the first steps towards working in the sector, floristry gives you space to learn, experiment and create.
