Department Information
If you care about animals and want to understand their behaviour, health and welfare, Animal Care at Tameside College offers an engaging introduction to a varied and rewarding field. This subject area combines scientific knowledge with practical responsibility, helping you develop an understanding of how different species should be housed, handled and cared for. Depending on your course, you could explore nutrition, animal biology, behaviour, health checks, hygiene, enrichment, welfare legislation and safe handling techniques.
One of the college's standout facilities is the purpose-built Animal Management Centre at Beaufort Road, officially opened in 2025. It includes specialist environments such as outdoor animal pens, a meerkat enclosure, an aviary and a reptile room. Learning around a variety of species helps you appreciate that different animals have very different needs and that good care requires attention, consistency and sound judgement. Practical tasks can help you develop observation, record-keeping and teamwork skills alongside confidence in a professional animal-care environment.
Suggested career pathways include animal care assistant, kennel or cattery assistant, animal welfare worker, pet care professional, animal collection assistant and veterinary care assistant. Further study may open routes into animal behaviour, conservation, veterinary nursing or zoological work, depending on entry and professional requirements. If you enjoy learning about living things and want to make animal welfare central to your future, this could be an excellent starting point.
