Department Information
Engineering is about finding practical answers to complex challenges, from designing components to keeping modern machinery running. At Tameside College, the Engineering department helps students develop technical knowledge, accuracy and the problem-solving skills sought by employers in manufacturing and technology. Depending on your programme, you may study engineering principles, mechanical systems, electronics, computer-aided design, machining, materials, manufacturing processes and health and safety. Practical projects can help you move from a drawing or calculation to a finished component or working solution.
A key feature of the college is the Advanced Technologies Centre at Beaufort Road, which offers specialist engineering facilities and equipment linked to robotics, computer-aided design and manufacturing, CNC machining and modern industrial technologies. These facilities provide an environment in which you can apply theory, develop workshop skills and gain confidence with industry-relevant methods. Engineering also encourages collaboration, clear communication and careful testing, because successful projects rely on more than technical ability alone.
Future opportunities include engineering technician, maintenance technician, CNC machinist, CAD technician, manufacturing technician, design engineer and mechanical or electrical engineer, with further qualifications where required. Whether you want to enter an apprenticeship, continue into higher technical education or build a career in industry, engineering offers routes into a sector that is constantly evolving.
