Engineering students are international stars at EuroSkills 2023

Two talented engineering students from Tameside College, Ben Love and Lucy Yelland, have made their mark on the international stage by clinching prestigious medallions for excellence at ‘EuroSkills 2023’.

Hosted in Gdansk in Poland, EuroSkills is Europe's largest skills competition, bringing together top young talent from 32 countries and a wide variety of skill sectors from engineering to bakery and computing.

Ben and Lucy were awarded the medallions for excellence after demonstrating outstanding international standards in the field of mechatronics.

The competition featured rigorous challenges for the students, such as building and programming complex automated assembly line equipment, to test their engineering expertise.

To prepare for the competition, both students, who are employed by engineering company Siemens, spent several weeks preparing with WorldSkillsUK coaches and teachers at Tameside College.

Lucy Yelland, reflecting on their triumph, said: "Participating in EuroSkills has been an incredible both of us. We are absolutely thrilled to be honest, the competition was incredibly fierce and to come just behind some of the top countries in the competition who have been training for a lot longer than we have and are extremely competitive is fantastic. I’m now looking forward to Lyon in 2024, where we hope to be picked for the team.”

Jackie Moores, principal and CEO at Tameside College, expressed pride in their accomplishments, saying: "Ben and Lucy are shining examples of the dedication and skill that our students possess and I am proud that the college’s reputation for skills is growing all the time. I would like to congratulate them on their amazing achievements on the global stage and wish them the very best of luck in being selected for the WorldSkills finals in Lyon in 2024. Well done to them both.”

In addition to Ben and Lucy’s success, Tameside College is now gearing up to host the WorldSkillsUK national finals for engineering and automotive, in November 2023. This event will see participation from four of the college’s students; further highlighting its commitment to developing young talent.
