Ben and Lucy are on ‘top of the world’ for skills competition finals

Following in the footsteps of our sporting Olympic stars, two Tameside College students will compete at WorldSkills Lyon 2024, known as the ‘skills Olympics’.

Ben Love and Lucy Yelland, who are employed by engineering company Siemens and study as apprentices with the college, have qualified for the competition after taking part in several heats. These include: the north west regional, national and European final, which took place in Gdansk, Poland.

Team UK will be heading for glory on the world stage in Lyon, France, just hours after the Olympic flame in Paris is dimmed and just like their sporting counterparts, Team UK have been training hard for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

All aged under 25, the members of Team UK will be competing, from 10th-15th September, in disciplines including mechatronics, which Ben and Lucy will be competing in, digital construction, cooking, hairdressing and painting and decorating.

WorldSkills Lyon 2024 will host over 1500 people from 65 countries, who will compete in 62 different skill disciplines. The prestigious event is designed to find the very best talent in each discipline, raise career aspirations for young people across the globe and boost the prestige of technical education.

Jackie Moores, principal and CEO at Tameside College, said: “Ben and Lucy are a testament to not only the college but their employer, family and friends. To progress from the north west competition all the way to the world finals shows they are amongst the very best at what they do, anywhere and demonstrates to other students the possibilities available. Everyone at the college will be rooting for them and I wish them every success in the competition. Well done Ben and Lucy!”
