Tameside College students take part in an AI ‘hackathon’ event in collaboration with Microsoft Azure
Computing students at Tameside College recently worked with staff members from Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing team and the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) to explore the possibilities of using artificial intelligence (AI) in the technology sector.
The event, which took place at the college’s Tameside One campus, saw 22 students take part in a day of hands on tech activities. These activities were designed to introduce them to the world of AI and introduce the idea of embedding it within their future careers.
They were also given the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session with Microsoft employees, who talked about their work at the forefront of developing AI for businesses and how it will affect the industry in the future.
Microsoft’s Azure is the company’s business computing arm and is used by organisations and governments around the world to develop applications and secure their data.
Joanne Bennett, head of department for computing at Tameside College, said: "This event was a tremendous opportunity for our students to delve into the world of AI. They not only gained foundational knowledge but also explored the vast potential of AI applications across various industries. Witnessing their enthusiasm and engagement reaffirmed the importance of these learning opportunities."
Abdul Khakim Qasim, computing student at Tameside College, said: "I found the hands on experience with AI truly eye-opening. It is exciting to see how AI can innovate and solve complex problems. This event has definitely sparked my interest in pursuing a career in technology."
