Junior MasterChef crowned at college

Tameside College hosts school’s competition for budding chefs to find the best local talent

Droylsden Academy held the final of their ‘Junior MasterChef 2023’ competition in the college’s Tameside One campus, which houses a state of the art training restaurant and kitchens, on Wednesday 18th January.

Nassim Rivoire, Tyler Wolstencroft and Bethany Mawocha, all year seven pupils, reached the finals after three previous rounds. These included a dish of their choice, a soup or stew and the semi-final with 12 dishes to choose from.

The competition was attended by the pupils’ parents, the Tameside Reporter newspaper, the competition judges and hospitality lecturer Ray Jones. Stuart Friedrich, owner of Brambles Bakery and Lorraine Ball, food and nutrition teacher at Droylsden Academy decided on the winner.

The students had full access to the college’s facilities and took expert advice from staff.

Nassim was crowned this year’s winner of the competition, after creating a Moroccan inspired dish with Tyler and Bethany being awarded joint runners up. Competition prizes included a MasterChef apron, cooking books, £30 and a chance to judge next year’s competition.

The event, which is now in its fifth year, is designed to inspire pupils who aspire to work in the hospitality industry and showcase the college’s facilities, which they could one day study in.

Nick Lowe, the event’s coordinator at Droylsden Academy, said: “I created this competition five years ago because I have a passion for cooking and wanted to give pupils who have the same passion an opportunity to showcase their skills. They haven’t disappointed this year. Congratulations to Nassim on being crowned the Junior MasterChef winner!”

Ray Jones, hospitality and catering teacher at Tameside College, said: “It was a really great opportunity for the college to host this event and for the pupils involved to see what a career in the industry can offer. The standard of food that they produced was amazing and for them to see and use the college’s facilities was really positive. Well done to the winner.”
