Students and staff celebrate ‘culture day’ at Tameside College with food, art, talks and discussions.
The event, which was hosted in partnership with the Muslim Arts and Culture Festival (MAC Fest), took place on Tuesday 19th May at the college’s Old Street campus.
Students from across the college were invited to attend the event, which included food from around the world, traditional garments and fashion displays, henna tattooing, creative art workshops and a talk by local Imam, Kamal Uddin on his life and background.
MAC Fest is an organisation founded by Qaisra Shahraz MBE, based in the north west, which aims to promote diversity and community cohesion through a variety of activities running each year, from February to July. It regularly holds workshops, creative arts classes and other events.
Events such as this are regularly hosted throughout the college calendar to help promote equality and diversity and develop students’ understanding of other countries and cultures. This is the second time that the college has hosted the event, which was bigger than ever this year.
Alongside students and staff, the event was also attended by The Civic Mayor of Tameside Shibley Alam and her consort Mohammed Khairul Alam.
Andrew McLeod, head of department for community education and ESOL at Tameside College, said: “Culture day was a fantastic opportunity for our students to come together, learn from one another and celebrate the rich diversity within our college community. Events like this, supported by organisations such as MAC Fest, are an important part of our curriculum and help to broaden students’ horizons, challenge stereotypes and build mutual respect.”
