Level 1 Hairdressing
Course content & format
This is a full-time study programme covering a range of hairdressing topics to prepare you for the industry. The units are assessed internally by subject specialist teachers. Units consist of both practical and theory assessments (exams and assignments), which are carried out in our new, high street, commercial salon.
Throughout the course you will study units that include preparing the salon, teamwork and effective working relationships, shampoo and condition hair, blow dry hair, assist with colour services and plait and twist hair.
You will develop important employability skills that are essential in hairdressing such as customer care, communication skills, supporting stylists in a salon environment, working as part of a team and organisation skills. You will also develop your English/literacy Maths/numeracy skills within your course.
You will also be required to purchase the salon uniform and a kit prior to commencing the course. Financial support is available to some students to purchase equipment.
Your learning experience
The course includes a variety of practical and theory classes. You will learn about assisting in a salon environment as well as developing the hairdressing skills needed to progress into the industry. You will learn what an important member of the team the assistant is to the stylists you will support.
You will take part in trips, visits, seminars and competitions alongside your course to further develop your understanding and knowledge of the industry.
You will undertake work experience in a salon setting to provide you with customer facing experience.
Entry qualifications
You will be interviewed by subject specialist teachers and should demonstrate enthusiasm about a career in the hairdressing industry. You will have the opportunity to re sit your maths and English if you do not have a grade 4 alongside your qualification.
How is this course assessed?
● You will be assessed by various methods of assessment including practical assessments, online exams, assignments and written tasks.

On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto:
● Level 2 hairdressing
● Level 2 in hair and media make-up
● Apprenticeship in a salon.
● Level 2 in beauty therapy
● Junior/salon assistant
