AAT Accounting Level 3, part time day

1. Business Awareness

This unit provides students with an understanding of the business, its environment and the influences that this has on an organisation’s structure, the role of its accounting function and its performance. Students will examine the purpose and types for businesses that exist and the rights and responsibilities of the key stakeholders, as well as gain an understanding of the importance of professional ethics and ethical management within the finance function.

Learning outcomes

Ø Understand business types, structure and governance and the legal framework in which they operate.

Ø Understand the impact of the external and internal environments on business, their performance and decisions.

Ø Understand how businesses and accounts comply with principles of professional ethics.

Ø Understand the impact of new technologies in accounting and the risks associated with data security.

2. Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements

This unit provides students with the skills required to produce statements of profit or loss and statements for financial position for sole traders and partnerships, using a trial balance. Students will gain the double-entry bookkeeping skills needed to record financial transactions into an organisation’s accounts using a manual bookkeeping system.

Learning outcomes

Ø Understand the accounting principles underlaying final accounts preparation.

Ø Understand the principles of advanced double-entry bookkeeping.

Ø Implement procedures for the acquisition and disposal of non-current assets.

Ø Prepare and record depreciation calculations.

Ø Record period end adjustments.

Ø Produce and extend the trial balance.

Ø Produce financial statements for sole traders and partnerships.

Ø Interpret financial statements using profitability ratios.

Ø Prepare accounting records from incomplete information.

Percentage contribution of this unit to the overall qualification grade: 40%.

3. Management Accounting Techniques

This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand the role of management accounting in an organisation, and how organisations use such information to aid decision making. Students will learn the principles that underpin management accounting methodology and techniques, how costs are handled in organisations and why organisations treat costs in different ways.

Learning outcomes

Ø Understand the purpose and use of management accounting within organisations.

Ø Use techniques required for dealing with costs.

Ø Attribute costs according to organisational requirements.

Ø Investigate deviations from budgets.

Ø Use spreadsheet techniques to provide management accounting information.

Ø Use management accounting techniques to support short-term decision making.

Ø Understand principles of cash management.

Percentage contribution of this unit to the overall qualification grade: 30%.

4. Tax Processes for Businesses

This unit explores tax processes that influence the daily operations of businesses and is designed to develop students’ skills in understanding, preparing and submitting Value Added Tax (VAT) returns to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The unit provides students with the knowledge and skills that are needed to keep businesses, employers and clients compliant with laws and practices that apply to VAT and payroll.

Learning outcomes

Ø Understand legislation requirements relating to VAT.

Ø Calculate VAT.

Ø Review and verify VAT returns.

Ø Understand principles of payroll.

Ø Report information within the organisation.

You are expected to have achieved GCSE Maths Grade 4 or above and a Level 2 accountancy qualification or have relevant experience or qualifications; GCSE English Language at grade 4/C or above is desirable.
When you're studying an AAT qualification your knowledge and skills will be tested via computer-based assessments (CBAs).

All AAT qualifications are evaluated through externally marked exams conducted at our AAT exam centre.

They are marked in one of three ways:

· Wholly computer marked, and so results will be available automatically

· Partially computer marked and partially human marked, and so results will be available within six weeks

· Wholly human marked, and so results will be available within six weeks.
The accountancy skills developed by studying this qualification will enable a student to seek employment with confidence and then progress to the next level of learning which is the Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting.

NOTE:

Ø All adult learners are required to register with AAT in order to begin the qualification. For the 2025–2026 academic year, the registration fee for the AAT Level 3 Certificate in Accounting is £235. Please note that this fee is set by AAT and may be subject to change.
