Level 1 Award in British Sign Language (BSL)

This is a part time study programme. This course is designed to enable you to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language on a range of themes that involve simple, everyday language. Gaining basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL.

You will learn through a variety of teaching methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles for example, assessments, group work, practical work, and interactive activities.

Throughout the course you will study 3 units in total. These include:

· Introduction to BSL

· Conversational BSL

· Communication in BSL about everyday life.
If you are interested in understanding and using a range of simple words and sentences in BSL, take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL, give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL and give and follow similar statements or descriptions in BSL then this course is for you. You could be looking at wanting to learn basic sign language skills to communicate simple conversations with Deaf people, want to learn a new language skill, want to progress to more advanced study using BSL or have parents, family, friends or colleagues who are Deaf. BSL courses give you the knowledge and skills to prepare you for a variety of career pathways including BSL interpreter, communication support worker, teacher of the deaf and speech and language therapist.

· You will undertake a 4–5-minute conversation with your course tutor at the end of each unit to show your conversational skills.
No previous experience is required for the Level 1 Award.

You will be interviewed for this course.
· You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including discussions and conversational tasks during lessons.

· Each unit will be assessed by carrying out a 4–5-minute conversation using BSL with your course tutor.

· This course is graded by a pass or fail.
On successful completion of this qualification, you can progress onto:

· Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language

If you meet the unemployed* criteria or are employed^ where the earnings threshold applies, and you need to study at Entry or Level 1 to progress to Level 2, tuition fees will be waived.
