ESOL Step 1

This is a part time study programme. You will not sit an exam for this course, your progress will be monitored and assessed by your tutor. You will learn through a variety of teaching methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles - for example: visual learning; role plays; group work; practical work; class projects; spoken, written and listening work; interactive activities.

The content will include: recognising letters and letter sounds; writing letters and single letter phonics, numbers and simple words, simple sentences and punctuation, telling the time, identifying days of the week and months of the year.
If you are someone that is learning English for the first time, and your native language does not use the Roman alphabet – this course is for you. Understanding and speaking English is vital to our lives living in England. This is the starting point, where you will gain the skills necessary to take the first steps in your journey to communicate in English. This practical course will give you the knowledge and skills to understand the fundamentals of the English language; before moving forward and developing further.

You will undertake two morning or afternoon sessions per week over a six-week period.

You will develop the ability to first recognise, read, write and say individual letters - you will then use these skills to recognise, read, write and say simple words. After this you will be able to use these skills to read and write simple sentences.

By the end of the course, you will have been introduced to the format that the following courses take – and have the confidence and ability to participate in those higher levels.

You will get the opportunity to continue to the following ESOL pathway offered by the college and – ultimately – access further/higher education or gain employment.
Pre-entry Level (Foundation)

- No formal entry requirements.
You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including discussions, displays, written, spoken and listening work and practical assessments.
On completion of the ‘ESOL Step 1’ course, you will be able to move onto the following course in the suite of courses offered – ‘ESOL Step 2’.

Following this, not only will you be able to continue on to the further ESOL courses offered at the college, but you will also be able to take a variety of other community learning courses offered at the college.
