Level 1 Animal Studies
Course content & format
This is a full time study programme. You will sit two external multiple choice tests and five assignments, these must all be passed in order to gain the qualification. You will learn through a variety of teaching methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles for example, case studies, assessments, group work, practical work, projects, extended writing and interactive activities. Health and safety is a mandatory unit, as this is key knowledge for anyone working in the land-based sector. The optional units cover introductory knowledge and practical skills in agriculture, environment and animal care.
Throughout the course you will study 7 units in total. These include:
· Unit 201 – Safe and Effective Working Practices in Land Based Studies
· Unit 202 – Preparing to Work in the Land Based Industries
· Unit 216 – Assist with the Maintaining the Health and Wellbeing of Animals
· Unit 218 – Assist with the Movement, Handling and Accommodation of Animals
· Unit 222 – Introduction to Wildlife and Conservation
· Unit 223 – Animals in the Wild and their Main Features
· Unit 233 – Introduction to Production of Livestock and Breeds
Your learning experience
There will be opportunities for trips and visits throughout the duration of this qualification. Trips and visits that may be undertaken include: Chester Zoo, Welsh Mountain Zoo, Dogs Trust, Cats Protection to name a few. All providing the learners with a unique learning opportunity within different aspects of the animal industry.
Level 1 will suit you if you are just starting out and want to gain the basic knowledge and skills needed to move on to further study or get an entry-level job working in animal care.
A City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Land-based Studies is for anyone who is thinking about or interested in a career working with animals, growing food crops, or managing out natural environment. Learners do not need any experience of working in a land-based role or any previous qualification, just an enthusiasm and commitment to gain new skills and learn about the importance of the land-based industries. Furthermore, you will gain sector specific knowledge and experience from guest speakers and educational visits.
Entry qualifications
Level 1 Diploma in Land Based Studies
- 3 GCSEs grade 1 or above.
You will be expected to engage with this course, you should be enthusiastic about working in the animal sector and have a passion for animals.
How is this course assessed?
· You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including discussions, displays, case studies, presentations, extended written work and practical assessments over the variety of modules you will cover.
· There are 2 externally marked multiple choice exams that learners will also need to complete and pass.
· This is a graded course where you can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction
What can I do next?
On successful completion of this qualification you can progress onto our Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care qualification, to further develop your skills and knowledge regarding animals and the necessary practical skills.
