Course content & format
This is a one year full time programme or a two-year part-time programme, in which a Higher National Certificate (HTQ) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is completed. With a career in Electrical engineering as your chosen route, this level 4 course offers students wishing to follow this pathway, both the higher level knowledge, theoretical aspects of mechanical science and design and also the understanding of how this is applied in industry. This qualification will suit students wishing to apply for higher technical level employment with a view to moving into engineering management posts.
The Core Component Units Year 1 (HNC):
Unit 1 Engineering Design
Unit 2 Engineering Maths
Unit 4 Managing A Professional Engineering Project
Unit 14 Production Engineering for Manufacture
Unit 15 Automation, Robotics and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)
Unit 17 Quality and Process Improvement
Unit 19 Electrical and Electronic Principles
Unit 21 Electrical Machines
All lecturers teaching this course hold a PCGE or equivalent qualification in education and have their Level 6 qualification in Electrical Engineering. The lecturers at Tameside College in the engineering department hold at least 5 years of revelant industrial experience.
Course Format:
face-to-face
Teaching time:
1 day a week
Location:
ATC Building at the Tameside College Beaufort Road Campus
Your learning experience
The HNC/HND in engineering course is designed to enable students who may have come through a vocational route to progress into higher education, building on the knowledge gained at level 3. Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQ) at levels 4 and 5 are an alternative to apprenticeships or degrees. They may suit you if you want a more practical, employer-led study programme, approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education.
HTQs are technical qualifications that employers have helped to develop so that you can get the right training and skills you need to succeed at work. As well as studying the academic content of a standard HNC or HND programme the HTQ will also focus on the application of the working knowledge and skills required by industry.
On successful completion of the HNQ, you will be eligible to enrol on the level 5 HND (HTQ)..
Entry qualifications
Standard entry to this course requires a minimum of 32 UCAS points from a recognised level 3 qualification in a related subject (eg. T-Level, BTEC National or A-levels or equivalent) or a higher level qualification in an unrelated subject area. You are expected to hold GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or equivalent. We welcome applicants who do not match standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate the ability to study this subject at university level and who can evidence relevant experience. An interview is required to ascertain prior achievement.
The BTEC Level 3 Engineering FT course offered at Tameside college for 16-23 year olds can lead directly to this qualification.
The BTEC Level 3 Engineering PT course offered at Tameside college for 24+ year olds can lead directly to this qualification.
What can I do next?
On completion of this accredited course you will receive a Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering awarded by Pearsons.
On successful completion of the HNC (HTQ) course, you may continue to the level 5 HND (HTQ). Once you have achieved the HND, you will be able to apply to study for a further year to obtain a full degree at university. This qualification is well regarded throughout the industry and the academic world. Career opportunities include managerial and technical positions in mechanical or electrical engineering.
