Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles
Course content & format
The qualification is made up of 14 units in total, these comprise of 7 practical (Skills) units and 7 Knowledge (theory based) units. A credit value is accredited to each unit and a total of 73 credits is required to pass and achieve the qualification. On successful completion of the Qualification 48 UCAS points are awarded.
The 14 units to be achieved are:
Units 051 & 001 – Knowledge and Skills relating to Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment.
Units 053 & 003 – Knowledge of, and Skills in Supporting Job Roles in the Automotive Work Environment.
Units 054 & 004 - Knowledge of, and Skills in Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices used in the Automotive Environment.
Unit 157 - Knowledge Of Diagnosis And Rectification Of Light Vehicle Engine Faults
Unit 107 - Skills In Diagnosing And Rectifying Light Vehicle Engine Faults
Unit 158 - Knowledge Of Diagnosis And Rectification Of Light Vehicle Chassis Faults
Unit 108 - Skills In Diagnosing And Rectifying Light Vehicle Chassis Faults
Unit 163 - Knowledge Of Diagnosis And Rectification Of Light Vehicle Transmission & Driveline Faults

Your learning experience
The Level 3 qualification is designed to meet the technical and diagnostic needs for today’s motor vehicle repair industry, including the diagnosis and rectification of faults within advanced complex systems. It provides the essential knowledge to be a competent service technician working on light vehicles including small commercials in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots. This qualification is ideal for anyone looking to be a qualified Motor Vehicle Technician or MOT inspector and is well recognised within the automotive industry. Learners will also gain a wide range of knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace, safe use of major workshop equipment and interpretation of data, fault codes and relevant diagnostic procedures relating to the major systems on the vehicle.
Your skills for each unit will be continually assessed through a range of City & Guilds practical Training and Assessment tasks in our industry equipped automotive workshop environment. Your knowledge for each unit will continually assessed by centre devised formative assignments, on-line (LJ Create) learning packages and through summative City & Guilds arranged ‘on-line’ multiple-choice assessment at the end of each unit.
Your time at Tameside College will be divided into 50% classroom delivery and 50% practical/workshop activities and the course from September to June for 35 weeks.

Entry qualifications
You will require a City & Guilds or IMI Level 2 Qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles (VRQ) and ideally a GCSE Maths and English Qualification at Grade 4 and above (or equivalent Functional Skills levels).
How is this course assessed?
Throughout the duration of this course, practical and theory aspects of the course are delivered. You will complete one online assessment at the end of each knowledge unit to check you have achieved the required level of knowledge and understanding. You will also be building up a portfolio of evidence showing the completion of the assessed practical tasks using the City and Guilds online Eportfolio system.
