About the course.
Step into the fast-moving world of automotive technology with our Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course — perfect for switched-on individuals who want a hands-on, high-skill career in a growing, well-paid industry. Whether you're looking for your first step into the sector or aiming to retrain for a more exciting and practical profession, this qualification opens the door to a wide range of automotive and engineering career pathways.
What Makes This Course Exciting?
You won’t just learn how vehicles work — you’ll understand why they work, and how to diagnose, maintain, and repair them like a true professional. Your skills will be highly transferable, giving you access to roles across vehicle servicing, diagnostics, motorsport, electric vehicle technology, and more.
How the Course Runs
This programme runs from September to June across 35 weeks, designed to fit around work and personal commitments while giving you a fully immersive learning experience.
You will attend two consecutive evenings per week from 5:30pm–8:30pm, covering:
Practical Workshop Night
Learn real industry skills inside our fully equipped, industry-standard automotive workshop. You’ll use professional tools and equipment while developing core mechanical skills.
Full PPE is required (not supplied).
Classroom Theory Night
A structured and engaging session delivered in mechanically themed classrooms, where you’ll build the knowledge behind the practical skills.
Online Blended Learning (Mandatory)
On a third night of your choosing, you will complete 3 hours of guided online study at home. Your tutor will set weekly tasks via Microsoft Teams, using the City & Guilds SmartScreen digital learning platform. This flexible online work aligns directly with the units covered on campus.
In total, this course requires 9 hours of study per week, and a minimum attendance of 90% to be eligible for certification.
What You’ll Study
To achieve the qualification, you will complete 7 essential units that blend practical skills with the underpinning knowledge needed for success in the motor industry. Practical sessions take place in a simulated commercial workshop, while theory is taught in dedicated mechanical learning spaces to bring the subject to life.
Ideally, you need to have had some provable previous experience with vehicles and repair equipment as this course is not entry level, preferably a City & Guilds Level 1 or IMI Level 1 qualification in Light vehicle maintenance and Repair Principles, or Maths and English grade C/4.
Throughout the duration of this course, practical and theory aspects of the course are delivered. You will complete written and online assessments at the end of each unit to check you’ve learnt the appropriate knowledge. You will also be building up a portfolio of evidence of your practical tasks both written and electronic.
Performance is tracked and reviewed by mechanical tutors at specific points during the term. Satisfactory performance will be required in all aspects of the course for progression to Level 3.
