Introduction to Car Mechanics (Sep)
Course content & format
This 10-week course is aimed at adult students who wish to learn about the repair and maintenance of road vehicles. The course runs one night a week for 3 hours 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm for 10 weeks.
Each week a different topic related to vehicle maintenance will be covered.
You will receive a certificate for completing the course at the end of the 10 weeks.
We have the course starting in September, January & late March.
Topics covered will include-
· Health and Safety and lifting vehicles using ramps and jacks
· Front and rear brakes servicing.
· Wheels and Tyres
· Front and Rear Suspension
· Steering Systems
· Cooling systems
· Oil and air filter servicing.
· General vehicle inspections
· Tools and Equipment
Your learning experience
· Work in the new fantastic Automotive Skills Centre (ASC).
· Train with an industry professional mechanic on real vehicles and training rigs.
· Learn industry recognised maintenance and repair procedures.
· Learn how to use a wide range of workshop equipment, including a range of the latest Halfords tools, Nussbaum 2 post and 4 post ramps and Jacks, Hoffmann tyre changing machines and wheel balancing systems. Block Automotive purpose-built rigs for repairing engines and diagnosing and fixing brakes and suspension faults.
· You will build and complete your own ‘Portfolio of knowledge’ using the supplied ‘Course accompanying handbook’
Entry qualifications
These courses are available to all adult learners with a keen interest in Automotive maintenance and repair, no matter your employment status, but if you are:
· Not in paid employment and receiving a means tested benefit - please bring with you current dated benefit documentation
Fees & Costs: £0, however, regarding PPE (Personal Protective Equipment, You are required to purchase steel toe capped safety boots and sturdy overalls before the course starts. You will need to bring these with you to the first session or you will not be able to take part.If students are eligible for bursary support and have been approved for this support, they are able to claim back the costs of these items. Please note that reimbursements will only be made if the items have been purchased from the College's approved supplier - GB Kits.
There is no requirement to buy any tooling for this course. You can bring your own tools & toolbox if you have one.
How is this course assessed?
This course is holistically assessed over the 10 weeks by the tutor. Students will watch technical demonstrations of the various repair procedures and then practice the skills themselves. The trainer at the same time will give detailed positive feedback in action to the students.
What can I do next?
Students that have ignited their interest in vehicle repair within themselves, could possibly apply for the recognised City & Guilds L2 Vehicle Maintenance Certificate or the L1 Vehicle Body Restoration course – this will further their skills and knowledge of vehicle repair.
