Applied Science (Vocational A Level)

This course is designed for students who enjoy science and want to develop their knowledge and practical skills through a combination of laboratory work, scientific theory and applied learning. It is ideal for students who are interested in understanding how science works in real contexts and who may wish to progress to higher education or careers in science-related fields.

This is a two-year Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Science, designed to be studied alongside other Level 3 qualifications. Pearson states that it has 360 guided learning hours and is intended to support progression to higher education.

Students study the following mandatory units:

· Principles and Applications of Biology

· Principles and Applications of Chemistry

· Principles and Applications of Physics

· Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques.

In addition, students complete one optional unit, chosen by the centre from:

· Scientific Investigation Skills

· Contemporary Issues in Science.

The course allows students to develop understanding across the three main science disciplines while also building practical laboratory skills, investigative techniques and the ability to apply scientific knowledge to realistic situations.
Applied Science offers a practical and engaging approach to science. You will work in laboratories, carry out investigations, analyse evidence and explore how scientific ideas are used in industry, healthcare, research and wider society.

The course is well suited to students who enjoy hands-on learning as well as scientific theory. You will develop skills in observation, measurement, data handling, evaluation and scientific communication, alongside your subject knowledge in biology, chemistry and physics.

Students may also benefit from enrichment opportunities such as practical workshops, guest speakers, subject visits and careers guidance linked to science and related progression routes.
Entry requirements for A Level courses

●  Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Mathematics.

●  A strong interest in and enthusiasm for, the subject chosen.

●  A willingness to commit to regular Independent Study outside of lesson time, as A Level courses require a high level of motivation, organisation and academic commitment.

●  An interview may be required as part of the application process.

Assessment is through a combination of external and internal assessment.

Pearson’s specification states that the qualification includes three externally assessed units and two internally assessed units, depending on the optional unit chosen. Internally assessed units are completed using Pearson Set Assignment Briefs, which are set by Pearson, marked by the centre and quality assured externally.

Final grades are awarded on the BTEC scale:

· Pass

· Merit

· Distinction

· Distinction*.
This qualification can support progression to:

· Higher Education

· Higher or degree apprenticeships

· Employment in science-related sectors.

It can provide a strong foundation for progression into areas such as:
