Introduction to Deaf Awareness

Course content & format

This course is designed to improve awareness, knowledge, and practical communication skills when interacting with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in personal, professional, and public settings.

You will learn through a variety of teaching methods which will aim to meet the needs of each individual and accommodate different learning styles for example, assessments, group work, practical work, and interactive activities.

Throughout the course you will cover:

· Understanding the difference between deaf, deafened, and hard-of-hearing

· Recognising common barriers faced by Deaf people

· Demonstrating basic strategies for effective communication

Your learning experience

If you are interested in understanding and using a range of simple words and sentences in BSL, take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL, give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL and give and follow similar statements or descriptions in BSL then this course is the first step for you. You could be looking at wanting to learn basic sign language skills to communicate simple conversations with Deaf people, want to learn a new language skill, want to

progress to more advanced study using BSL or have parents, family, friends or colleagues who are Deaf. BSL courses give you the knowledge and skills to prepare you for a variety of career pathways including BSL interpreter, communication support worker, teacher of the deaf and speech and language therapist.

Entry qualifications

· No previous experience is required for the Introduction to Deaf Awareness.

· L2 ESOL or functional skills English

How is this course assessed?

You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including discussions and conversational tasks during lessons.

· This course is graded by a pass or fail
