English Entry 3 Functional Skills (Jan)
Course content & format
This course provides a foundation for progression to employment and further education, and helps learners to develop skills for everyday life.
This course aims to support learners back into the learning environment, especially if they have not studied for some time.
It enables learners to:
· listen, understand and respond to verbal communication in a range of familiar contexts
· acquire an understanding of everyday words and their uses and effects, and apply this understanding in different contexts
· read with accuracy straightforward texts encountered in everyday life and work, and develop confidence to read more widely
· write straightforward texts and documents with clarity and effectiveness, and demonstrate a sound grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
You will attend class once a week for 2 ½ hours. You will also be required to complete tasks at home to support your studies.

Entry qualifications
No prior knowledge, understanding, skills or qualifications are required to enrol on to this course. However, you will be assessed at the start of the course to ensure you are on the right English pathway for your current level.
How is this course assessed?
Formative assessment takes places at regular intervals throughout the year to help prepare you for the summative assessments.
You will have an assessment in: speaking & listening, reading and writing.
