Tameside Academy (External) - Staff Training (Sep-Jan)

Step Into Teaching is designed for adults who want to gain a recognised Level 3 teaching qualification and begin or progress into a teaching or training role within the Further Education (FE) and skills sector.

At the core of the programme is the City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) – the nationally recognised introductory qualification for people new to teaching in FE, adult education or workplace training.

In addition to the Level 3 AET, the programme includes enhanced development strands that provide practical skills in digital teaching and inclusive practice, making this offer broader than a standard AET course.

Core Qualification – Level 3 Award in Education & Training

The qualification develops the essential knowledge, skills and confidence required to teach or train adults. You will explore:

●  The roles, responsibilities and boundaries of a teacher or trainer

●  Planning inclusive and engaging learning sessions

●  Delivering teaching that meets the needs of diverse learners

●  Assessing learning and providing constructive feedback

●  Preparing for and delivering a short, supported micro-teach observation

Enhanced Development Areas (Added Value to the Qualification)

Alongside the Level 3 AET, learners also complete additional development activities designed to strengthen employability and classroom readiness.

Digital Teaching and Learning

This strand focuses on practical digital skills used across FE, including digital assessment tools, the use of AI to support workload reduction, and emerging technologies that enhance learner engagement.

Inclusive Practice and SEND

This strand develops confidence in inclusive teaching, with a focus on trauma-informed approaches and strategies to support learners with dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD and ASD in vocational and adult learning settings.

These enhanced elements complement the Level 3 AET and provide skills that are highly valued by employers.

Programme Delivery

The programme is delivered through weekly, face-to-face evening sessions at Tameside College. Sessions are practical and interactive, combining:

●  Short taught inputs and workshops

●  Collaborative discussion and activities

●  Practical lesson planning and teaching practice

●  Micro-teach preparation and observation

●  Tutorials and assignment support

This structure allows learners to gradually build confidence while balancing study with work or industry commitments.
You will be supported by experienced FE practitioners who understand the realities of teaching in vocational and adult education settings.

The programme focuses on real classroom practice, inclusive teaching strategies, and the effective use of digital tools. You will also receive support with study skills, academic writing, referencing, and using Microsoft Teams for assignment submission.

By the end of Step Into Teaching, you will feel confident and prepared to move into a teaching or training role.
There are no formal academic entry requirements for this qualification.

Applicants must:

●  Be aged 19 or over

●  Hold vocational or subject-specialist experience in the area they wish to teach

●  Have English skills sufficient to complete written assignments

●  Be considering, or already working in, a teaching or training role in Further Education, adult education or the workplace

English language suitability will be confirmed during induction through a monitored, live assessment activity.
Assessment is ongoing and supportive, in line with City & Guilds requirements, and includes:

●  Written assignments exploring teaching practice, inclusive approaches and assessment theory

●  A micro-teach observation, where you plan and deliver a short teaching session observed by a qualified tutor

●  A portfolio of evidence, including assignments, lesson plans and reflective evaluations

Guidance and feedback are provided throughout the programme.
On successful completion, learners can progress to further teaching and training qualifications, including:

●  Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

(subject to GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above, and a Level 3 (or equivalent) vocational or subject-specialist qualification in the area they wish to teach)
