Level 2 ESOL Skills for Life

This Level 2 ESOL course is here to help you improve and perfect your English and feel more confident using it in all areas of everyday life, education and work.

During the course, you'll work on three main areas:

Reading – You’ll practise reading practical, real-life texts like formal letters, leaflets, newsletters, and newspaper articles as well as fiction such as short stories and excerpts from novels.

You’ll learn to recognise different types and purposes of texts and their main layout and language features. You will learn to apply a range of reading strategies to understand the main message, locate important details, identify the author’s attitude, the tone of the text and figure out the meaning from context.

Writing – You’ll learn how to plan, draft and write a range of texts such as emails, blog posts, articles, narratives and essays on different topics. We’ll help you with structuring your texts, choosing the right level of formality, perfecting different aspects of your grammar as well as spelling and advanced punctuation.

Speaking and Listening – This part of the course will help you become an active listener and a confident speaker. You will be able to contribute during discussions on various topics, do presentations in front of a small groups, give and respond to constructive feedback. You’ll practise

small group conversations, asking and answering questions, expressing opinions and responding to others, listening to recordings for main message and important details. You will also work on your pronunciation and expand your grammar and vocabulary range to handle a variety of real-life contexts. This will help you communicate confidently in real life situations such as attending job interviews, communicating at work, participating in community events, volunteering etc.

You'll get lots of support and feedback from your teachers and have the chance to improve your skills in a friendly and stimulating environment, studying with a group of your peers.
You will experience a variety of learning activities on this course which will aim to develop your English skills and your confidence in using English in your everyday life, for example: pair and group speaking activities, small group discussions, delivering presentations, giving constructive feedback, listening to short recordings and watching short videos, planning, drafting and writing a text, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation exercises, spelling tasks, quizzes and short tests.

You will improve your digital skills by completing some of the learning activities on PCs, with full support from your teachers. You will also be expected to complete a range of short homework assignments including interactive online activities, which will help you reinforce your knowledge and understanding of the course content and further develop your independent learning skills.
- No formal entry requirements but you will need to pass an assessment test to demonstrate you are suitable for this level.

· Achievement of personal targets

· Three examinations during the year: Speaking & Listening, Reading, Writing. Each exam is PASS or FAIL. You will need to pass all the three exams to complete the course successfully.
On successful completion of this qualification, and if your ability is strong enough, you will be able to progress on to a vocational area of your choice ( subject to successful interviews and meeting other relevant requirements). Alternatively, you can progress to GCSE English.
