Aspirations (A) Foundations for Learning & Life
Aspirations A is designed to support learners with a wide range of learning needs to achieve the outcomes outlined in their Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). The curriculum is highly personalised, reflecting each learner’s strengths, needs, and long-term goals.
Learners are supported in preparing for adulthood through:
● Taking initial steps to engage with their local community in meaningful, supported ways
● Developing an early awareness of health and wellbeing
● Building foundational independence skills for everyday life
● Gaining an introductory understanding of the world of work
● Increasing confidence in making choices and expressing preferences
● Exploring opportunities for creativity and self-expression
English and Maths are delivered through personalised sessions and are embedded across all areas of the curriculum. Learners develop literacy and numeracy skills through practical, real-life experiences and bespoke learning opportunities.
Aspirations A is a full-time study programme, typically delivered over one year, with the option to extend depending on individual needs. Learning takes place through a combination of practical and classroom-based activities.
For learners aged 19+, a three-day provision may also be available.
The learning experience in Aspirations A is nurturing, structured and highly supportive, enabling learners to develop confidence and independence at a pace that suits them.
Communication development is central to the programme, with a total communication approach used to support both understanding and expression. Learners are encouraged to build on their existing abilities while developing confidence across a variety of settings.
They are supported to apply their skills both within the college environment and in the wider community. Key areas of development include:
● Expressive and receptive communication
● Independence
● Self-advocacy
● Self-regulation
